Dave Wenrick of Prep, Jim Fries
of Prep and Mel Cooper of East scored touchdowns. Wenrick
directed the attack. Fries gained 112 yards on 15 carries
and had a 42-yard kickoff return. Cooper gained 77 yards
on 14 rushes. A crowd of 14,000 saw Wenrick plunge 1 yard
for the first score. Mike Nuara of Strong Vincent kicked
the first of his three extra points. The City drove to
the County 4-yard line featuring Wenrick’s 22-yard
rollout before Denny Taylor of Fort LeBoeuf ended the threat
with an interception. Jerry Trocha of Tech returned an
interception to the City 40. Fries gained 35 yards on 2
carries, Denny (Tank) Weigle of Academy gaining 13 more.
Fries went the final yard for the score. Jack Jensen of
Academy had an interception to set up Cooper’s 16-yard
TD run in the final minute. The City finished with 268
yards rushing to 96 for the County. |

A 4-yard touchdown pass from
Barry Masterson of Prep to Bob Woods of East with 5 minutes
left decided the game, with 12,000 in attendance. The PAT
kick was low. The County responded with a drive to the
City 5-yard line, but the march stalled with 40 seconds
left and the City ran out the clock. Everett Eddy of East
scored on a 5-yard run on the opening drive. The PAT kick
was wide. Denny York of Iroquois recovered a fumble on
the City 7-yard line. Joel Magee of Harborcreek then ran
6 yards for the touchdown. Gary Renaud of McDowell ran
the PAT for a 7-6 County lead. Joe Bufalino of Prep gained
50 yards on 10 carries. Eddy had 46 yards on 14 rushes.
Renaud had 46 yards on 11 attempts. Bob Fox of McDowell
ran 9 times for 40 yards. Gary Mikovich of Girard was outstanding
on defense. Mike McCoy of Cathedral Prep played in the
game. He went on to star at Notre Dame and in the NFL. |
